"And one of the first cafes recommended by a coffee insider is well off the beaten track - Barclays in Heathmont"
- "True Brew" by John Bailey - M magazine - The Age August 23 2009
Situated in what was once the local branch of the State Bank of Victoria, Barclays Café was created and established in 2002 with the objective of providing a delightful location to relax and enjoy the opportunity to meet with family, friends, business colleagues or clients. We aim to provide a wide range of products, offering quality food, coffee and beverages, supported by excellent service in a friendly atmosphere.
Overlooked by large pine and Eucalypt trees, the redeveloped undercover courtyard out the back is an oasis from suburbia and is the place to be when you want to relax.
Over the last twelve years, Barclays has become a genuine institution in Heathmont village. This is reflected by the numerous awards that it has won over the years including-
• Maroondah winner of the Melbourne’s Favourite Café.
• Finalist and winner of the Best Café in Maroondah.
• Awarded the Leader Best Business Achiever for the City of Maroondah in the Leader Awards.
• Awarded the Maroondah City Best Medium Business.
Barclays has been reviewed and recommended by The Age Cheap Eats over a number of years and included in the Good Café Guide.
Barclays pioneered Fairtrade coffee in the area. Barclays continues to use only FAIRTRADE, top-quality organic coffee. At present the House coffee is "The Jude", a FAIRTRADE coffee blend especially created by Jasper Coffee in memory of and honouring Judy Lewis. This delicious coffee is a blend of beans from Peru, Nicaragua, Honduras, Thailand and Ethiopia.
Our choice of FAIRTRADE coffee brand is a decision based on ethics rather than economy, only slightly altering the purchase price of our coffee. Coffee Growers in countries such as Timor, Mexico, Ethiopia, PNG, Nicaragua and Peru are greatly benefiting from our use of FAIRTRADE. FAIRTRADE coffee guarantees that farmers receive a fair price for their coffee, unlike a lot of other companies that exploit poorer nations. Not only is FAIRTRADE high quality internationally recognised coffee, it also gives us the opportunity to be ethical consumers and make a real difference in people’s lives.
For example to get the beans for the Niugini Okapa (PNG) coffee the exporter and FAIRTRADE growers employ the single local policeman to guard the bounty over 90 kilometres. This can take 16 hours along the boggiest road in the Universe. Apart from the upkeep of the road, this co-operative has built a school, provided books, supplied mattresses for the hospital and financed a portable saw mill.
